The trapeze style tops and dresses initially known as the tent dress has an A-line silhouette that begins to flare out at the bust itself. It has no waist line and depending on its length can be worn as a top or a dress. The tent dresses were initially designed in bold patterns and colors and usually incorporated two or more patterns, looking quite literally like a circus tent, meant to be accessorized with bold beads and jewelry.
However, the most classic avatar of the trapeze dress was seen in the 1950s and 1960s. They were narrow at the bodice and flared out into a top or dress, embracing the hermaphrodite figure made popular by supermodel sensation Twiggy. But the genius who heralded this then unconventional silhouette into the world of couture was 21 year old Yves St. Laurent, during the summer right after he took over the House of Dior.
The trapeze dresses offered a reprieve from the obsession with tight bodices and corsets loosening the strings and allowing the women some space to breathe. They soon became an iconic fashion symbol during the 1960s made evident by the several cameos they make in the hit TV show Mad Men. With time they evolved into halter neck trapeze dresses which St. Laurentagain revamped into a turtle-neck design.
The trapeze style silhouette made a comeback in 2007 with the help of Victoria Beckham at a time when the silhouette was associated with maternity wear. Why would someone hide their waist if they werent pregnant right? Wrong. The trapeze tank dress is a welcome change during the size-zero phenomena. It suits most body types when worn at the right length. A mini trapeze tank could show of your shoulders and legs and hide any flab that you might not be proud of but unless you had the height to pull it off, a long one could make you look frumpy. If you feel like you dont have great legs you can always pair a short dress with a pair of leggings, jeggings or skinny jeans.
The trapeze tank dress is a great look to sport in the summer as it is airy and light. Even if a trapezoid isnt the first shape you would think of as feminine, these dresses can highlight the parts of your body you want to show off and are usually made in flowing fabrics in lovely prints and colors making you look flirty and feminine. During the winter, you can pair it up with skinny jeans, boots and a jacket and even a chic hat and if you feel like it, and can even cinch it at the waist with a belt.
The versatility of this dress knows no bounds. There are great dresses available from several brands like ASOS, JS Boutique, DKNY, Free People as well as Forever 21. The new charcoal grey trapeze tank dress from Chloe will give any little black dressa run for its money. Its dark color is clean and stark but its criss-cross back and beading around the neck are fun and flirty. Its beautiful cotton and silk blended fabric has a great flow to it without being too light, proving that the trapeze tank dress is something that can be dressed up or dressed down, as you deem fit!
